Upgrading Android on my Huawei IDEOS 8150 .. was easy!

I recently (in the last 3 months) bought a new cheapo Android phone Huawei IDEOS 8150. The excuse for this was that my daughter was turning 10, so consequently HAD to have a phone. I figured this was the push I needed to get on the Android train, and maybe simplify things like listening to mp3s on the way to work, having a synced calendar in my pocket, etc etc.

Before getting the phone I did some googling and it appeared that it was possible to make this cheap phone work even better by upgrading from Android 2.2 to some other custom Android based on 2.3. Why? These things were mentioned, and all were compelling:

multitouch support (really?);
better battery life/power management, aka..
..overclocking/underclocking (hmm...);
support running newer apps;
something about running apps of the SD card rather than internal storage;
generally improved UI performance (aka "snappier")
a nice suite of standard software with gesture support (CyanogenMod looks great as a complete environment with documentation..).

So I thought I'd attempt the upgrade before I started using the phone. I figure if I start using it, and get some data on it, I'll be too scared to upgrade later.

Which ROM?
This is actually a really tricky question, because ROMs only tend to be available on dodgy-looking forums as links to even less comforting download sites, and half the time they're down. Also they tend to have cumulative, confusing release notes.

I settled on DroniX (v0.4) eventually, because it didn't seem to have any problems. (Yes - the site is in italian..)

The problems with the others:

IDEOS Dev Team's Gingerman - wifi was broken on the one I tried, and getting hold of later builds seemed impossible (lots of broken links, generally disorganised archives of releases)
FusionIdeos - Google chat didn't work for me, and there was a permanent notification telling me the network was down (grr!)

Some ROMs appeared to download and install fine, but after the final reboot did not appear to have changed anything about the phone. Possibly they were meant to be used as a skin over another ROM (file sizes for these ROMs vary wildly), or the upgrade process did not complete. So that ruled out other ROMs, e.g. one of the many CyanogenMod ports (possibly from IDEOS Dev Team).

Another thing I didn't like about some ROMs was a generally cruddy UI, with over-the-top boot animations and cluttered home screen/launcher.

Also related to this issue is how to obtain the ROM image. A popular app ROM Manager is available via the Android Market. This simplifies things, maintaining lists of links to various ROM images so you can select and download them directly to the device. This didn't seem to be an option for me - the ROM I needed (there weren't many listed for IDEOS, possibly only one) appeared to be a broken link. So I would download an image from a website and transfer it to the SD card manually (via USB).

Note however that ROM Manager was integral to the process, as it also allows you to backup your current ROM, which is fundamentally useful.

Performing the Upgrade
The process is as follows:

backup anything on phone
install the phone's driver (on a Windows PC)
root the phone (using SuperOneClick, Windows-PC only)
install ROM Manager app on the phone
backup current ROM
install new ROM
test, rinse, repeat if desired.

Installing ROM Manager is straightforward as it is available on the Android Market (unless you've installed a ROM that has broken your network access, or doesn't have the Market app installed).

Backup current ROM image:

first, need to install recovery ROM

disconnect phone from PC
reboot phone (off & on)

launch ROM Manager, select "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery"
select "Huawei U8150 Ideos"

The Truth About Multitouch

As it turns out, you can't magically make this device have multitouch by installing a new ROM. The screen can see both your fingers, but it may confuse the x and y coordinates of them. You can install multitouch test apps which make this clear.

However, even with this limitation, pinch-to-zoom works well in (for example) Google Maps, which is reasonably nice.

What Else is Improved?

Not much really. There is an over/underclocking app preinstalled, so I can tweak the CPU speed, but I don't really use this - I leave the minimum CPU speed at 61 MHz, and max at 652 Mhz, which is probably a little different than the defaults. Perhaps the phone is running a little better and smoother, I can't be sure.

Battery life seems reasonable, probably improved - 2-3 days or more, but I don't do much with the phone.

If Music Playback Stutters This Might Fix It

The only time I used the CPU app was to fix a problem with FusionIDEOS. When the phone was idle (screen blank) and playing music, music playback would stutter. Somehow it occurred to me to raise the lower CPU limit, which was at something like 30 MHz, and this remedied the problem.

Conclusion

I appear to have mainly done this for "the fun" of it, so if you're not that keen, feel free to stick with the standard ROM, it's probably fine. Also note that I gave up attempting to run Android 2.3, I think because I couldn't find any 2.3 ROMs that worked, so I'm ended up running 2.2.1 (an upgrade of 0.0.1).

Living the Dream - LIVE Electronic Music

As mentioned in a previous post, I have long dreamed about being able to play electronic music live. I've finally done it!

A Rudimentary Approach

As far as live electronic music goes, this is a somewhat primitive performance. There are four songs, each has approximately 3-4 parts, and there are a small number of effects/parameters available for me to tweak. Also I'm relying heavily on a great-sounding dub delay effect which can feedback; I've used it to fill things out, give things dynamics and shape, and also used it (screaming feedback like a guitar amp) for short-term sound effects.

Also, of the four songs, 2 are built from short loops of (my own) previously recorded material - i.e. the notes are not being sequenced live, and there is no synthesiser producing the notes live.

Another limitation is that there are no stabs or manually-played samples/notes/effects; everything is in some kind of pattern which is triggered quantised. (The main reason for this is I ran out of time.)

Limitless Possibility

But I'm really excited about what is happening in this live set. Even though I've heavily used samples, I had a huge amount of control available to me live, and more importantly, it was easy and fun to perform with no plan in an underground bunker (through my low rent sound system, running the whole night off a single power outlet). I had a lot of flexibility, nothing much was planned. What did I have control over?

Within each song, I had a level fader for each part, meaning the songs were mixed (in a primitive sense) live. These faders could be set up differently depending on the part, for example one synth strings part had the fader pre-reverb.
Each part had at least one other parameter on a knob; this could be a filter cutoff for a synth part, or a fader between two drum sounds for a drum part.
All parts had one or more (looped) patterns, which could be triggered/untriggered (quantised to an appropriate interval) with a button. In the case of multiple patterns, a button allowed me to navigate up/down to select the pattern to play next time around.
Some parts had a triggerable variation or fill - for example, hold down a button to play a randomised (schizofrenic funk drummer) fill until the button is released.
Each song was assignable to a global (DJ-ish) channel - with a level fader, 3-band EQ, and a send to the global dubdelay. Assigning a song also made its parts available - i.e. I could only trigger parts etc when a song was "loaded" into a channel.
Although I only had two songs' worth of hardware control, this was live-mappable and I could easily manage (parts of) all four songs playing at once if I want to.

Of course this was all implemented in handy SuperCollider. I spent a bit over a month or so of occasional evenings and bits-of-weekend developing things and jamming it out. Most of my time was spent on infrastructure - things like setting up the code to live-map a song to a hardware channel, implementing a simplistic EQ/band compressor for the channel strip, factoring out the dub-delay effect so all songs can opt-in to using it, etc.

What made this really exciting and fun for me is that I could treat this like a software project. I could start small, implement a simple beat that I could drop & interact with live, building in more complexity later. It felt like prototyping - sketching out a framework of how things should work, and revisiting different aspects later until I had something much more complex, organic and live up and running.

I may post again with more detail about how SuperCollider supports writing and performing like this - so comment if you want to find out more about something.

Home Made Rubber Insoles

This is my shoe bl og post. (I think someone else did one but I can now only find that one to link to, comment if you did a shoe blog post.)

I made some rubber insoles for my shoes, to make the soles thicker. I walk to work most days, and I also buy a lot of $30 shoes off 1-day, which usually are pretty lightweight and thin, so I might do this a lot more. The rubber is from one of my favourite shops, Para Rubber.

I've only been wearing them for ten minutes so they might be completely hopeless, we shall see.

I Made An LED Matrix

Of course I have been meaning to do this for a while (this and about fifty billion other things..).

Why:

I have a few LEDs lying around because of the super cool LED sign my brother made for me
I once watched a handy introductory video on the concept
I aim to one day make a controller featuring a huge grid of light up buttons (this is a small step on the way)

So the picture is almost self-explanatory. The container lid is drilled with 4x4x2 holes (I bent the 1mm drill bit, so the first 2 holes are 1mm, the rest 1.5mm). The LEDs are inserted, all facing the same direction (oriented so the flat, negative side of each LED is on the same side!). The legs are then bent and soldered together horizontally, and then vertically. In between, I taped (masking tape!) over the previous soldered connections as a crude insulator.

Then I tested it with the multimeter (also a gift from my bro, but one that I got to build myself (with the soldering iron he gave me!)). Handily, the test current from the meter actually lights the LEDs up, which is great for "it's now lights out time, stop reading please" demonstrations to kids (at about 8.10 pm at our house).

Needless to say it works perfectly.

What next for my LED matrix?

Well, about a year ago I bought a whole lot of electronics components for my planned (predicted? hypothetical) USB-MIDI controller project. So the plan is to try driving the LEDs (simple strobed animations, etc) from an AVR brain through two 4051 multiplexers. I don't know much about how to do this but I will learn! Hopefully this will be then form a good light-up part for underneath a 4x4 button array in this supposed controller...

Squeezer - Pure Juice (Haszari remix)

I have a new remix out - on Newclear Music. The original is by Squeezer, who are from Auckland (NZ). I don't know too much about Squeezer, but when I heard the parts I put my hand up and said "yes please". I haven't really done that before, because I know it takes me a long time to complete a remix (note - this was probably almost a year ago).

Anyway what drew me to the track was the beautiful guitar part - which for me evoked certain 80s film soundtracks, e.g. John Hughes movies, or Twin Peaks. I aimed for a slightly seventies disco downgrade, drenched in acid 303 lines against a chilled out bass and beat. In all, quite a different sound for me, and I'm pleased!

Also on the EP are diverse takes from none other Newclear honcho nsu, AK deep d&b slow burner Soul Science, breakbeat champion Will Marshall, as well as a new remix from Squeezer (the TSV remix).

What Am I Looking For In Music Software

I have spent a lot of time in my life playing with different music-making software, getting excited about what can be done, and ultimately getting bogged down or frustrated. I have also spent a reasonable amount of time working on custom tools for making music. So what am I looking for? And why haven't I found it yet?

It seems in the past ten or so years, music software and technology has become much more powerful, usable, and accessible (i.e. cheap). This, combined with the convenience and ease of digital distribution, is why Cartoon Beats came about - we are mucking around making our own music, and if we are going to be hustling around labels and DJs trying to get them to promote our music, we might as well release it ourselves. So that's great, but something's still missing for me.

Producing a track, and DJing it out have become completely separated for me - one of them involves sitting at a desk, endlessly tweaking and fiddling with a timeline UI in software, the other involves standing up, bashing buttons, waggling my arms and/or nodding my head while subtly adjusting various aspects of a fixed and unchanging recording. I crave the ability to combine all this into one activity - the power and flexibility of composition and production with the immediacy of DJing.

Alongside this I feel a huge disconnect between how I used to make music, when I was in metal/rock band - jamming, noodling on riffs with other players for hours on end. The music was definitely not locked to any timeline, and often evolved in front of you, even if many of the elements were pre-planned or rehearsed. I miss that! And I thought that by now (ten years later, surrounded by supercomputers and extremely affordable USB MIDI gear) it would be much easier to achieve!

So I have tried out lots of software with these kinds of goals in mind. And always found myself wanting more..

So what is it that I want?

Power & Flexibility or Expandability

I don't want a system to present arbitrary limitations or obscure or prevent cutting edge algorithms/processing from being used. A simple example - I want completely flexible routing, which most software provides these days (GarageBand doesn't; Reaper does). A more complex example - should I read about some clever DSP technique, I don't want to have to wait for someone to write a plugin, or attempt to write one myself; ideally the technique can be implemented/prototyped directly in the software (e.g. Pd contains many units which can be used as building blocks to build up arbitrary processing; the same technique in Reaper might require a custom plugin, or a complex mess of routing connecting many plugins). Another way of looking at this: if I happen upon some interesting technique in a tutorial or academic paper, it should be possible to apply/adapt the technique.

Modularity or Abstraction

This is essentially the flip side of flexibility - a complex graph of processing units, or a sequence of audio samples, or notes, should be able to be treated as a single unit, with useful parameters exposed. I have found that this is a limitation with timeline-based software (e.g. Reaper or GarageBand) - a channel is a single level. You cannot for example sequence some audio and then treat the sequence as a unit; you have to paste it, warts-and-all, around the timeline to reuse it, and of course, you can't easily adjust something in all these pasted copies. MIDI clips are one way around this. Also I find myself wanting to package up snippets of automation data.

Visibility

By this I mean not obscuring things. VST plugins for example, are really great units with lots of expressive power packed into them; but more often than not the actual core of what the plugin does is obscured from the user. This is especially frustrating when you have lots of plugins that do subtle variations on the same thing. I don't want these things to be a black box - I want to be able to find out or understand. Note that this is distinct from abstraction above, which allows the user to package things up and (temporarily) obscure the details. Also important here is that the techniques, musical information and processing used in a track should be as easy to get out of the system as they are to put in (so you aren't locked in to the system).

Casualness or Immediacy

Traditional musical instruments and musical gear have presented a very casual kind of interface - you pick the thing up and start playing it, or connect it to a sound system and turn knobs. I want this kind of expressive power to be possible or available to me. What I don't want is for production to be something that I have to lock myself in a room for hours to do - I want it to be more like a toy, and something that I can attempt to involve my kids in (or expose them to). You know, like picking up a guitar.

Conciseness or Efficiency (or Scalability)

I have only recently realised how important this is to me. As my projects got more complex, I found that I was more constrained by previous decisions. With modular software such as Jive (or Pd), while it might technically be possible to play a complete live set of a few original tracks, to do so would not really be feasible. This really ties in with modularity mentioned above, being paranoid about backing up/losing work, and the fact that my day job is writing software. A text-based file format (as in Pd), or even text-based user interface (SuperCollider, or any one of many audio programming languages) is a huge advantage from the point of view of organising the content in a project. On the other end of the scale for example, a binary file format that folds in midi information and audio samples etc is not ideal.

So I'm delighted to announce, I have found a system that appears to do well in all these respects - SuperCollider. In future blogs I will go into why I am so happy with SuperCollider, and what I have been doing with it - but rest assured, I have been jamming with it, playing with it as a musical/audio toy, experimenting with the low-level nuts and bolts of audio processing, and even working towards playing live with it.

Of course this is my own idiosyncratic view, and I don't have much experience with non-free/cheap musical software. In particular, Ableton Live, AudioMulch and energyXT all seem potentially very useful. So feel free to chime in with your experiences...

QtzRendang - Open Source Quartz Composer Movie Renderer

Announcing QtzRendang, a little utility app for rendering Quartz Compositions to movie files. I cobbled this together from example code for my own purposes, and since I couldn't find anything on the web. "My own purposes" typically involve rendering a loopy composition to a six or seven minute movie to make simple but effective videos for Cartoon Beats releases.

By the way, there is another app for this purpose developed by the Kineme crew - QuartzCrystal - which supports spatial and temporal oversampling to reduce temporal and visual jagginess. At US$18 this is a great little app, but as I'm a bit of a nerd and a cheapskate, and there wasn't an open source solution, I decided it was worth writing QtzRendang.

CoGe is another great project on Google code. It's an open source visualisation/VJ mixer/live sequencer.

Back to QtzRendang

Drag & drop a composition, specify frame resolution, duration, and frame rate & output filename. Optionally tweak composition parameters, then click render.

Why is it called QtzRendang? Well it renders .qtz files to movies, and the instant noodles I had that week were rendang flavour. Rendang is a slow-cooked Indonesian dish which seems like it would be pretty yum. I've never had it.

I just finished work for the year, and am getting everything ready for a holiday up north.

While I am out of town, SoNic Smith will be looking after the radio show, so stay tuned in if you're in the Dunedin area (and of course grab the stream if you're not). Needless to say SoNic will keep the beats and the banter rolling - cheers SoNic!.

Monitor Speakers

I have been wanting to make some el cheapo near-field monitors for ages. My plan was to get the cheapest drivers I could find, probably with tweeters built in (aha! car speakers!) and put them in decent-sized boxes made out of MDF.

Last weekend when we painted our bedroom I saw that Warehouse had $20 4 inch car speakers and I was like "I am so gonna finally do this". (Luckily for me, the car speaker aisle is the same as the paint aisle.)

SO this weekend I did the stuff in about a day. A little bit of measuring and marking yesterday, and pretty much all day today sawing, glueing and getting tired.

The boxes are glued together with No More Nails and then screwed as well. I didn't use any tables or information about what size cabs would be best for the drivers, just decided based on the size I felt would be good & practical but ensuring there was a reasonable amount of internal volume.

And the best news - I am completely astounded by how they sound! Exactly what I was hoping for, enough range to produce on, they sound good without having to be turned up too loud, and much clearer highs than any of my other speakers.

Supporting AppleScript in a Cocoa Document-Based App

It seemed like it should be easy, and it was, but finding out how was hard. So I am posting what I did here in the hope that the next person wanting to do it finds the info they need here.

What I wanted to do

I had a Cocoa document-based app. I.e. I had followed my nose with Cocoa, and ended up with an app that supported multiple documents. Documents are represented by in subclass of NSDocument called MyDocument.

I wanted to support viewing and changing properties of the document from AppleScript.

Note that I wanted to support 10.5+, so the techniques here may not be appropriate for older versions.

How I ended up getting it working

Specify things in the app's Info.plist:

NSAppleSriptEnabled = YESOSAScriptingDefinition = MyApp.sdef

Made an sdef file, which includes all the framework supplied stuff, and that MyDocument extends the framework document, and has a property, refered to by the key numBananas:

Implement KVC accessors for the property. These looked (sortof) like:

This was all that it took, and now I can enumerate all the docs, set their number of channels etc etc.

Yep, new bits are here from Haszari. I've been fiddling with this for a while but I think now it is ready for blog primetime.

It is my remix of SoNic Smith's Ladies Style. SoNic Smith is a prolific Dunedin producer who makes all kids of breaks, as well as the odd bit of rave d&b and even some acid house flavours. My aim with this mix was to take the bouncy break beat original in a fidget-house direction, maybe with 3% bassline house influence. Pretty happy with how it's turned out.

Again my usual arsenal of great open source tools was used to make this, Ardour, which really packs a punch these days (don't buy Pro Tools eh) for all the editing, all LADSPA plugins for the mix/edit and mastering, ZynAddSubFX doing the business as a fat as all heck fake analogue synth (man that is a great softsynth). Go download all that software (just install 64Studio, it's all packaged in there for ya).

How To Fix A Specific Problem With A Shoutcast Stream

Radio 1's web stream has for a long time been intermittently lo-fi, even though the actual stream format is nice-enough 128k mp3, i.e. 44.1kHz stereo. More often than not (and pretty much permanently) the audio quality was in fact 22kHz mono, i.e. shithouse, tragically being re-streamed at 128k (oh the waste.. oh the bits...).

So, since the Energy Flash podcast relies on this stream, the problem was one dear to my heart. For a lil while I had been emailing, attempting to suss it out, get to the bottom of it, or just keep hassling so someone figures it out.

Didn't get anywhere, but last week I noted that the tech guy hangs out on GChat sometimes, so I decided to keep banging on about it in an attempt to really get it fixed. AND WE DID IT!

The culprits:

Microsoft's Audio Compression Manager and

a little-known piece of software known as RecALL Pro (note the super slick modern website featuring Comic Sans MS)

R1 uses RecALL Pro for logging purposes, recording at low quality everything broadcast on the station. Running on the same machine is WinAMP and a Shoutcast server powering the web stream.

When RecALL pro starts up recording, it requests a low-fi audio stream from the antiquated (and I think deprecated) MS ACM. I believe that this results in subsequent requests to the audio input (particularly the one made by WinAMP) being downgraded to the low quality. This makes sense, as MS ACM (as I see it) is an older, lower level technology that was probably designed when only one app would even think about accessing the soundcard.

So the solution was to start up WinAMP first, and maybe (I wasn't there!) tweak the quality settings (still low quality) used in RecALL Pro.

File Edit View... How to Make Your Mac OS X System Font Smaller!

Since the dawn of Mac OS X, new-to-the-platform users have cried "but the font is huge" followed closely by "can I really only choose between blue and grey?"...

I don't have a solution for the second problem, but I have a sorta-solution for the first one, and it got me pretty excited.

I saw a tip on TUAW explaining how to put the date in the menu bar. This got me pretty dang excited because I always refer there, and up til now had to click to get the date. This tip also has the added feature of allowing you to show the date as numbers, which is great, because usually I have to count on my fingers to determine what month it is.

Anyway, back to the point, by having a date format with this guy "/" in, I believe has caused the system font to be bumped down a notch (presumably to accomodate the date in the menu bar), and lemme tellya, it looks so much better. All the system context menus everywhere are using this slightly smaller font, and all the app menu bars too. I'm so pleased, everything is a tiny bit smaller.

Are you worried? I'm not, clearly this is a weird side effect that could disappear at any moment, and still only gives you one other font size choice (oh, and I haven't tried switching back, maybe it's broken forever). BUT how great does it feel to make a 0.5-point (estimated) change to the Mac OS X system font?

Tricky Does Great Covers

Tricky has a new album out. No one does breathy, atmospheric, post-trip-hop quite like Tricky (or even approaching the way he does it?).

What's really cool is he's dropped another cover. I may not be fully up with this running gag of homages (hard H thanks) to great songs (can someone tell me if there is one on Pre-Millenium Tension...?), but there is a great rock cover of Black Steel on Maxinquaye. The original Black Steel (+ "In The Hour Of Chaos"), as far as I know, (once again: "prove me wrong, kids, prove me wrong") is by none other than Public Enemy. So it was more of a political/conscious hard-hitting rap track, made over into a sung (of course by Martina), melodic punk track. Nice cover!

So, on the Knowle West Boy, the cover is of one of my favourite pop artists (possibly my number one? the mp3 stats indicate she's well up there), Kylie (Minogue).

The track is a great one, off the Fever album, which was of course a corker when it comes to electronic-pop music: Slow. This is right up Tricky's alley, breathy, atmospheric, sweaty. Of course Martina does most of the vocal but true to form Tricky's there muttering and whispering, breathing down her neck. Great new realisation of a good song. Also nice cover!

Come to think of it, I think the whole (genre) of dubstep owes something to Tricky. I'd wager he was putting out breathy and gutteral and hummy music before Burial was a teenager (?).

The survivors like to role play by having pretend parties and getting married in game or pretending they are part of some non-existent police department. I think there is even a zoo or something where they pretended they were zoo keepers and animals. These people don't want to play in a zombie apocalypse game, they want to nancy around in animal suits and create a reality where they won't get mocked for it. Yeah, I hate them as well.

So come ruin their fun with me by breaking into their safe houses and eating them, cause I'm really sick of these people shitting up my internet.

Well, how out of it have I been lately?! In two senses, 1). working so hard I haven't been getting out to do my usual groupie thing & 2). working so hard that when I do get out & about I'm completely mashed. Yeayaa!!

So, my last two favourite gigs of the year: your very own Haszari at Pop, charging! I managed to make it despite swearing I'd never go there again cos of pretentiousness & shoe nazis, & having to reluctantly leave a firey cocktail fuelled game of Texas Holden I'm sure I was winning.
Anyways, was very glad to make a (shortlived perhaps?!) appearance and take full opportunity to be a nutter on the dfloor. Yeana!!
& last Friday, despite being asleep by 10pm following the Library kids Christmas Party, managed to rouse myself, thanks to the 1.30am text, to get down in time for Alf at Bath, to go nutters for his 45 minute filthy electro set (more challenging this time due to complete sobriety) (plus the Rage Against the Machine gem almost killed my mojo) (but was restored & more with Goose's Bring it on - probably a remix - in fact I think it's the Felix Cartel JFK remix. It's heaven).

No big gigs planned for NYE, happily stuck in Dunners with all my favourite friends who are working over the break, so we are gonna take over a three story mansion & I'm fully in charge of the techno electro set. Excited? Hell yea!!

I have received my new old CD player, a Denon 2000F Mk2, which is really from the dawn of the age of CD mixing but it works great (it seems to be temperamental on the odd CD but plays many scratched/burnt CDs). The buttons are rubber, which I dislike, but its instant start is instant, and making adjustments using pitch bend buttons (as opposed to a wheel, or touching the edge of a spinning record) seems to result in good mixes.

Fascinating stuff.

Impromptuality

Well.. "this goes out, to all my family & friends/when times were hard/you were there"...

Last night I for the first time had a DJ booking tanglup and it turned out I wasn't playing at Pop. Ah well, 'sall good, cos moments before I was lamenting the fact that I wasn't able to check out Tril lion (AKA Jody from Dark Tower's new band The Incredible Braking Wheel.

So that was all damn fine, country-tinged roots rock urban guerilla protest stylez, and I recommend you click the above links and friend em, and check the music, and go see em when they're in your town.

AND THEN Ellamental Anakissed, possibly spurred on by the soundz, had the bold idea to take over the fairly idle at that moment Bath St. So off marched SoNic Smith to liaise with the always genial staff at Bath St. Needless to say, they were amenable, so within 20 minutes we (and when I say we I mean Nic) had rousted 20+ people from the streetz and other more rebutable places and transformed Bath St into an impromptu rave!

Yea for emergency beat action! It went on for a couple of hours, and there was some bloody impressive dancefloor, and half way thru the smoke machine started up, boosting the atmos sufficiently.

Favourite Films of 2007

Hi everyone.

This is my first blog post. The big joke about blogging is that people who
are otherwise perfectly capable of getting a real job (ie one that
pays) spend hours of their own time working for free. It doesn't make
a lot of sense until you realise that its all just a load of
advertising - which is exactly what this post is. My favourite films
from 2007! Don't take my word for it - rent or buy the DVD today!

Now I didn't pay to see any of these but I do recommend them. If
anyone wants a lengthier and more serious appraisal of the films I've
looked at, all the year's reviews are available at critic.co.nz. Some
from me and some from the other good people that I organised in my
capacity as Critic Film Ed. Some interviews too. Worth a look.

No particular order:

1. Zodiac (Dir. David Fincher)
Is this movie about obsessives or by obsessives? Maybe for obsessives since
this is the only film I went to see twice this year. Not as dark as you
might think, just very detailed with great characters and unflashy
but pitch-perfect direction. Closer to Scorcese than say, Ferrara, which is a turnaround for Fincher.

2. Black Book (Dir. Paul Verhoeven)
An absolute riot of sex, violence and backstabbing. Its ridiculously
entertaining and quite scandalous - "good" Nazis and the Dutch
resistance behaving badly.

3. Little Children (Dir. Todd Field)
Funny and dark and sad. Like real life only with paedophiles. Did you
know that Todd Field was the piano player in Eyes Wide Shut? (Thanks
imdb.com).
Shades of Kubrick here, the direction is very cool and controlled.

4. Day Watch (Dir. Timur Bekmambetov)
Who knows what the hell this movie about. It's quite convoluted but
smart enough not to take itself too seriously. Ideas, ideas, ideas. Maybe too
many but it looks fantastic. A genuinely original vampire film. You
don't need to see the first movie Nightwatch but, you know, it helps.

5. Transformers (Dir. Michael Bay)
Say what you like about Bay but he knows how to make 'em big. Apart
from the visuals which are pretty much state-of-the-art, he manages to
make it come together storywise. Spielberg's influence is pretty apparent in all
that boyhood fantasy stuff. Shia LaBeouf will go far and adds a lot to
the film. Not quite Close Encounters but what is?

6. Golden Door (Dir. Emanuele Crialese)
I probably watched about 50 festival films this year. This was one of
those pleasant surprises. Check out the festival site for more info
(http://nzff.telecom.co.nz) but it's basically an dirt-poor family of
Italian hicks coming to America in in the 1800s. The film never
actually goes beyond US Immigration control but you'll learn a lot
about what makes America tick from this - it's a real eye-opener.
(Scorcese was involved in production which makes a lot of sense).

8. Blades of Glory (Dirs. Josh Gordon, Will Speck)
Funny, funny, funny. High-concept certainly but it's not a bad concept
and it's got enough stupidity and wrongness to drown that out anyway. Heder and
Ferrell are fire and ice, baby.

9. Exiled (Dir. Johnnie To)
I was expected something along the lines of early John Woo but this
was something else entirely. There's a political element to the film which I don't really
understand but for me it was about a bunch of losers - an interesting
take on the gangster genre which borrows a lot from the revisionist
western. (Actually there seemed to be a lot of
films about losers this year - Half Nelson, Eagle vs Shark, Perfume
etc).

10. Control (Dir. Anton Corbijn)
I highly recommend Corbijn's music video collection although he is
probably best known as a photographer. He's a perfect choice for
director (since he knew the band quite well) and he does a great job
in his first feature. Don't let the black and white put you off, the ending is obviously sad
but the material is also quite funny at times. (After a long search I
have concluded that Corbijn never worked with New Order on a music
video which I find strange).

Also:
Pan's Labyrinth: didn't hit me quite as hard as others but very good nonetheless
Science of Sleep: I saw it last year. Probably my best review - i had
to fill half a page so i let loose.
Black Snake Moan: lots of energy but what is this film trying to say?
(read Sight & Sound for some ideas)
Eastern Promises: because I just saw it and I had already written the
list. Very very good.

There was an article in The Listener about IQ tests recently. This got me all fired up as all mention of IQ does, ya know, everyone knows that any concept of IQ has to be totally flawed and probably very culture specific.

Anyway I didn't end up with a coherent enough opinion to post about it (tho I really wanted to!), but the point of this 1/3rd post is who to blame regarding IQ silliness:

the media, for occasionally misreporting IQ related findings and theories
IQ researchers, for even bothering to try and develop the concept of IQ as reliable and relevant

$2 down the toilet

Last weekend I indulged in an evening out and about on the town, popping into a few of my favourite haunts for a toast here and a dance there, and discovered on a visit to the powder room, someone had dropped $2 down the toilet. This sparked a stimulating discussion about for how much money one would stick their hand down a bar toilet. $50 was the call.

In a recent OUSA pub safety review, unfortunately limited to only those establishments in North Dunedin, it was discovered that the general loo situation here is somewhat disturbing. I would tend to endorse this statement; & this particular powder room has always been a pet peeve of mine, ever since the door got pulled off its rails leaving distinct lack of privacy. Being a private kind of girl I kicked it rather forcibly back onto its rails.
See I always knew those martial aerobics classes would come in handy.

On an alternative note, it would really make my night if bar staff and door staff please know the name of your dj. Now that the fink has finally folded, we have no regular tangible gig guide. We’re not all ignorant teeny bopper slappers, some of us are truly there for the music.
& I’m not talking about the latest remix of total eclipse of the heart.

Better Faster

So how do you convert dub tracks to DnB? Well it seems you just have to play it at twice the speed; try it out with 'The Black Seeds - Cool Me Down'.

Windows media player has the ability to change the speed that songs are played back at ('Play Speed Settings'), which is accessed by a convenient slider in a panel to the side of the play list meaning you can mess around with it as much as you want while the track plays. A friend* of mine discovered this after listening to 'Stereophonics - Superman' which he described as "comically slow". However, he found that when cranked up to 1.4 speed it produced a good, easy to listen to beat.

This inspired him to go through his music collection finding tracks for an album that he labeled "Better Faster". Here's a track listing!

There are some issues to take into consideration if you're going to start speeding tracks up. Obviously it works better for slower tracks (so any Magnetic Fields song will do). And speeding up an already fast track made me feel a bit like I was having a panic attack, it just seems a little intense. There is also the potential for making the lyrics so distorted that you can't understand them - it's always going to be tempting to put the speed up to 8x, but so far it hasn't been a very satisfying experience.

Now I suppose I should put together an album called 'Better Slower'. Yes, I'm looking at you Punk genre.

One cover of notable interest is ‘Paul Anka - Smells Like Teen Spirit’, which is obviously a Nirvana cover. It has a kind of swing beat with some trumpets and other horn type instruments. The contrast to the original is so huge that I highly recommend getting a copy to listen to (legally of course) - the change in genre of the original to the cover is really quite remarkable*. However, while being an extremely interesting cover version and well worth listening too, I found it quite quickly became annoying. If you’re familiar with Nirvana’s lyrics then you probably wouldn’t lynch me if I was to label them as somewhat complicated (replace complicated with nonsensical). Now, no disrespect to Kurt, but if you can actually HEAR his lyrics, as you can in a swing cover, then the stupidity of the lyrics becomes readily apparent and largely difficult to ignore.

So anyway, who’s a Nick Cave fan? Yeah, me neither. And quite frankly his song ‘The Mercy Seat’ blows. Apparently it’s his signature song, and if that’s his signature then he needs to work on his handwriting skills (you see what I did there, I don’t even know what you call that kind of genius). There’s so much going on (noisy guitars and drums and some sort of string instruments (violins?) along with various sound effects) that’s it a bit hard to listen too. There’s no doubt it’s a powerful song though, telling the story of a man on death row waiting to be executed on the electric chair, detailing his final thoughts and worries. What would really make this song something special would be if an old-school country singer with a deep & powerful voice did a version. Well, thankfully, Johnny Cash gave us just that in 2000 on his American III: Solitary Man album. Go buy it. Or borrow it off DJ Haszari, I’m sure he has a copy.

Now, I like ‘back’ as much as the next man, unless of course that man is Sir Mix-a-Lot. According to his 1992 track ‘Baby Got Back’ he is a big fan of the ladies that have big butts (“I like big butts and I cannot lie”). I’m not here to question the validity of the statement of whether or not he can lie, perhaps he has a very serious moral code that he strictly adheres to. I’m here to tell you that the Jonathan Coulton version of the song is very entertaining. It’s an acoustic, easy to listen to version of the song that might appeal even if you didn’t like Sir Mix-a-lot’s original (what? do you have the fear of the black man or something?)

The Jacket

I've remastered and tidied up The Jacket, used some more sample, and made a housier version which may be more clubby. They're all available at last.fm (see player below) or GarageBand which is a good option if you wanna iLike me on Facebook.

I used the EQ in excellent JAMin to make the spectrum roughly flat (it was quite low-end-heavy and there were little dips here and there). I didn't use any compression, but I think the EQing left a lot of room for makeup gain, so it could well be a lot louder. Anyone know about mastering? I don't.

Here is a work-in-progress track currently called "Jacket". I'm happier with this (even in its current state) than I have been with any homemade music thus far. Here's a last.fm player, and the track is free-downloadable from last.fm, so go and grab it!

It was made with my favourite free software: ZynAddSubFX synth, Hydrogen drum machine, Ardour digital audio workstation, and sequencer Rosegarden. This is all installed and configured to run with low latency by default in the wonderful free operating system (Debian based) 64Studio.

Val Kilmer and Paragraphs

Everybody knows who Val Kilmer is right? Correct! He's the dude that was called 'Ice' in Top Gun which was the coolest name in the movie (to be fair, 'Maverick' was a cooler name but that Tom Cruise nut job went all Scientology and sullied the memory of it so that means 'Ice' is now top).

Val Kilmer was also Batman at one point but unfortunately he kind of sucked. He wasn't as bad as that Michael Keaton dude and it would never be a challenge to beat George Clooney at the acting game so I suppose he could have done worse.

There was another Batman which came out a while back which I haven't seen, hopefully that shit had Sean Connery as Batman 'cause damn man, that would be trippin'. So I guess when you look at it that way he was actually a good Batman, I mean, it's all relative, amIright or amIright? I am so right.

Apparently Mr Kilmer was also in Tombstone, True Romance and a bunch of other gold but I don't really remember - It was a long time ago.

I've noticed my hair can occasionally take on a bit of a Johnny Bravo look. At the front it all sticks straight up sometimes and I'm not sure why. Why did evolution develop this particular hair feature for me? Is this meant to help me escape tigers or make crappy tools out of stones and a stick? Since bringing up the issue of song-destroying monotonous electro remixes, I have gone out and shown my support for the track by buying the old-arse not relevant original mix from that dang beatport.

Just before I did this, I found a presumably old remix competition which had the parts of the song freely downloadable (128k mp3)! Great!

The bonus is that now that I realise the original doesn't have much of an intro, I might be able to give it one with a bit of looping of some of those parts. And I keep the smug "I actually bought this" warm fuzzy feeling.

Slightly curious is that one of the parts is kick and it seems to be eight minutes of kick drum (with gaps for breaks of course). (The others are vocal, bass, drums and music.) I guess this is house music; the kick is pretty important right?

On Energy Flash on Saturday, I mistakenly led Schraa to believe that Climbatize by The Prodigy dates back to the old-school, hardcore days. By way of an excuse, the Z in the title (along with perhaps my hankering for a Chris Lake remix of some true rave business?) may have been the only reason I ventured forth this information.

King Unique sacrifices "song" for relevant electro

I heard the King Unique remix of Gabriel & Dresden's "Tracking Treasure Down" on the weekend while helping out with our local house music radio show, Energy Flash on Radio 1.

My reaction was: the original was a great crossover clubby trance pop song, with a very pop/song structure, and King Unique succeeded in using the vocal over a much more constant/monotonous (i.e. the chord changes are not there) electro track.

Which is fine and all, obviously that's more relevant, and that's what I tend to be into a lot of the time, but for me it had the effect of making the vocal fairly irrelevant.

If you want to hear the King Unique remix, listen to the energyflash podcast. If you want to hear the original, get in a time machine and go back to last year and listen to Pete Tong's Essential Selection thru early/mid 2006.
